| DWC was asked by the German Foreign Ministry (Auswärtiges Amt or AA) to provide an update on the current status of solar powered desalination. A 4-day visit of 10 UN embassadors from AOSIS states (Alliance Of Small Island States) in Germany was organized by the AA titled "Environmental policies of Germany within the UN framework". Within this thematic framework some of the participants asked for an expert update on solar desalination. Oliver Kopsch from DWC had the privilege to be the sole counterpart during a 2 hour discussion round on the pros and cons on solar powered desalination and its practical implementation in AOSIS states. Since this discussion round was aimed to be practical and implementation oriented, DWC explained the key components of solar powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) based on a commerically available portable system. One of the key messages have been that current technologies are available to solve drinking water problems in a sustainable way. There is no need for further theoretical studies but it is time for practical implementation strategies. Due to DWCs' practical expertise in the Maledives on solar RO the group also discussed the financial impact of setting up renewable powered, autonomous desalination systems per island or clustered in remote areas. Based on previous work DWC showed that CO2 free drinking water production is not only environmental friendly but it is also profitable within a very short timeframe with additional benefits of avoiding waste (plastic bottles) and increase employment opportunities for local communities.    |
