| Intersolar www.intersolar.de . The worlds largest solar trade fair. As usual DWC has attended this exhibition to check on the latest trends on renewable energies and its possible use in water treatment. Also, as usual, very little has been exhibited on the show for solar powered water treatment. However, two bits of interesting water products/application can be noted: 1) PV powered UV desinfection This unit has been on display on oe of the solar wholesalers. DWC has already seen it in action in Rwanda. Basically, you fill the top with any kind of raw sweet water. Ideally with extremely low turbidity. Raw water is collected inside this unit. You push a bottom on the front and inside a UV lamp ignites. Once the UV is fully up and running a valve opens and the raw water is passing via the UV lamp onto the the tab. Water is desinfected. On the bottom half of the unit are the batteries powered by the above solar panel. ![]() Verdict: Nice machine 2) BIPV Building Integrated Photovoltaic Instead of a roof, solar panels are used. As simple as this! The nice part is that those panels are water proof (difficult to see in the pic- but true) and still lets some sunshine through. Spending lots of time in Africa and the tropics this is a nice feature to collect rain water during rainy season and harvesting sun all day. Not spending money on roofing can nicely contribute to quick cost recovery. ![]() ![]() Verdict: Interesting, but really cost numbers/repayment to be checked. |
