Natural swimming pools - Private and public

Public swimming pools often face high running costs. In case of renovation a number of communities are asking questions if they should continue building "traditional" swimming pools with the associated high technologies or should they not look into more sustainable solutions and copy mother natures principles.

The following informations are certainly biased towards more natural solutions.

Examples of a good case study from Germany can be found here

Clear pool water without chemicals - Design

Through individual planning and design pool water is a great attraction for every garden or public community. On top you create an impressive biotope with a number of various plant and flowers.

Kids corner (1)

In designing public pools you must keep in eye on the kids pool to empty the pool regularly and replenish it with fresh water. The usually higher water temperature can easily be achieved by simple, solar powered water heating devices.

Design elements (2)

Almost any kind of design can be achieved. Vertical walls up to 3 meters depth can be covered with natural stones, natural stairs can invite you to the pool, soft sand beaches can lead the way in, separate no swimmers areas with low water depths... almost any kind of ideas and design can make the natural pool a real exciting place. The typical monotonous, everywhere the same rectangular pool "boxes" can be the past.

Vegetation (3)

The objective of establishing an appropriate vegetation is to achieve already in the second year a solid protection against erosion (waves, steps..) of the beach zone. The larger sand particles, low nutrient areas require a dedicated selection of individual species that also need to be visually attractive.

Platforms, latters, bridges .. (4)

Elegant designs made from stainless steel, or more natural designs made from wood everything is possible. Swimming platforms, bridges, jumping boards can all be integrated. It is just a matter of your taste and budget.

Adventure areas (5)

Cascades, water falls etc are special design areas in the non swimming area that can be particular exciting.

Water source area (6)

Sources or infiltration areas are next to the regeneration zones the other areas where water are cleaned based on natural processes. Upcoming water will be directed via filter granulate. The large reaction area enables best microbiological and physical cleaning processes.

Regeneration zone (7)

Conventional sand filter systems are replaced by constructed wetlands. The cleaning power is so effective, that larger vegetation areas at the pool level can be avoided. In the filter system dirt particles and nutrients are extracted from the pool water. The legal requirements on bathing water quality are therefore strictly met.

Cost and other benefits of natural systems vs. traditional pools

  • 50% cost savings in building natural pools vs. technical solutions
  • 70% cost saving in operation due to avoiding high tech or chemicals
  • Huge energy and Co2 savings in heating pools by using solar systems
  • Additional living space for plants and animal in winter if pools are not used
