DWC evaluated solar powered vs diesel powered pump solutions for rural Ethiopia dimanche, 17. janvier 2010
Sufficient drinking water availability is one of the biggest challenges in rural Ethiopia today. Surface water sources are ususally contaminated and bottled water for many different reasons not the long term solution. Ground water however, is in many places available in suitable quality. Traditionally hand pumps are being used to bring shallow ground water up to the surface for human consumption. Deeper wells are mostly serviced by diesel powered pumps.

For an area in rural Ethiopia DWC has been briefed to evaluate technical options in selecting the most appropriate well pump technology.

During a field trip by DWC we have found that almost all diesel powered well pumps are not functioning properly. Hand pumps are usually in good conditions although not functioning long term and are not suitable for deeper wells.

DWC's work clearly shows that solar powered deep well pumps are the better solution long term then current diesel powered pumps.

During 2010 DWC will install, train and operate a number of solar powered deep well pumps.
