DWC designed and implemented three sustainable water projects in Ethiopia Tuesday, 10. January 2012
DWC has designed and implemented three ground breaking renewable powered water projects in Ethiopia:

1. Solar powered well project in Afto

Location: 7° 27' 20.48" N , 37° 59'2.57" E
Installation date: December 2011

Left: Guest house with exterior flushing water toilet and (cold) shower. You can also sit outside and enjoy the stars and silence. (However, this guesthouse is then called "Hyena Lodge" since you can watch at night wild hyena in very short distance :-) )

Centre: Solar tracker with16 PV Modules, 14 panels used for direct powered pump and 2 panels used for charging mobile phones

Centre right: Drinking water tank 5m³ volume

Right (house): Water & energy kiosk selling water @ 20l jerry cans and mobile phone charging , water is being desinfected/polished using UV.

Bottom line:
1.) 10,000 to 15,000 local people have now safe drinking water - all year
2.) With practically zero operating costs SMART creates revenues for funding extensions

2. Solar powerered well project in Jamaya

Location: 7° 26' 59.09" N, 38° 0' 36.65" E
Installation date: December 2011

Left: Drinking water tank 5m³ volume

Back: Solar tracker with 14 panels for direct pumping (no battery) and 2 panels used for mobile phone charge

Right: Water and energy kiosk selling to private and commercial customers at social prices. Water is being desinfected/polished using UV.

All projects on this page are operated by the local NGO named SMART Ethiopia (Sustainable Management of Alternative and Renewable Technologies) based in Hawassa, supported by DWC.

3. Wind hybrid powered desalination project in Semera ("Kopsch" tower)

Location: 11° 47' 33.62" N, 41° 0' 12.40" E
Installation date: December 2011

Ground floor: Raw brakish water (39°C)
First floor: Desalination unit based on RO with 600l/h product water output(20 TDS) consuming 900W (24VDC), electrical controls with batteries
Top floor: 2 x 5m³ drinking water tanks gravity flows into various distribution points inside and outside the compound, wind power generator
(People involved: Oliver Kopsch, Carsten Krause, and plenty of others)

Raw water quality:
Chlorides mg/l  880
Fluorides mg/l       0,43
Sodium mg/l       897,5
TDS mg/l          2.623

Product Water quality:
Chlorides mg/l   <12
Fluorides mg/l   <  0,05
Sodium  mg/l         4,25
TDS mg/l           <52

The beauty of such a "Kopsch"-Tower is that you can design it to any raw water quality and quantity using different treatment technologies incl. waste water treatment. You can also install different renewable power production options such as hybrid solar & wind & public grid & diesel back up.
