DWC organizes international symposium on decentralized water supply possibilities Thursday, 5. May 2011

As a reaction to their presentation on decentralized drinking water supply options in the context of the German-Russian Environmental Conference in October 2010, DWC was asked by the German governmental agencies BMU /UBAto organize a consultation conference concerned with decentralized and renewable powered water supply possibilities for Primorsk, a small town in the Russian exclave Kaliningrad.

As the major of Primorsk, Igor Kowal, states, his town is confronted with severe problems in its water supply infrastructure. The centralized drinking water supply consists of 3 wells (of which one is only in reserve) which date back to 1945. The pipe system is out-dated and a water tower distributes unfiltrated drinking water. The water quality in Primorsk is thus poor. A chemical analysis has shown that the water is contaminated with pesticides and nitrate.

DWC thus organized a symposium which provided an opportunity of discussion with a Russian delegation and German technical experts in questions of decentralized water and energy supply possibilities at the premises of a leading rain water company in Germany.

The participants discussed possible solutions for Primorsk´s infrastructural deficiencies. In addition to presentations on drinking water purification through microfiltration, ultrafiltraton or reverse osmosis technology and rainwater harvesting methods, the Russian delegation had the opportunity to walk around the premises and see how the decentralized usage of regenerative resources can be put into practice.

At the end of the symposium all participants agreed that the day had been an important impulse for a dialogue that will eventually lead to a more sustainable and modern water management scheme.
